Quan informem sobre allò que s'ha dit, sovint cal canviar alguns detalls per a mantenir el sentit. Molts dels canvis del discurs indirecte es corresponen en anglès i en català.
| Silvia said: "I saw you yesterday." (La Sílvia va dir: "Et vaig veure ahir".) |
Al cap d'unes quantes setmanes això es podria expressar així:
| Silvia told me that she had seen me the day before. (La Sílvia em va dir que m'havia vist el dia abans.) |
En altres circumstàncies, el mateix incident es podria expressar així:
| Silvia told him that she had seen him the day before. (La Sílvia li va dir que l'havia vist el dia abans.) |
Els canvis en els pronoms (you → me, him) es corresponen amb el català (et → me, li), i el canvi en el temps del verb també (saw → had seen, vaig veure → havia vist).
