5.6 Also, as well, too, even

All these expressions show that something is in addition. Also usually goes in mid-position (see adverbs); as well and too usually go at the end of the sentence. Also, as well and too are similar in meaning, e.g.:

The company produces refrigerators. It also sells spare parts. (La empresa produce frigoríficos. También vende recambios.)

The company produces refrigerators. It sells spare parts, too. (La empresa produce frigoríficos. Vende recambios también.)

The company produces refrigerators. It sells spare parts as well. (La empresa produce frigoríficos. Vende recambios también.)

As well is more colloquial than also and too.

Even shows that something is in addition and emphasises its importance. It usually goes in mid-position, e.g.:

The thieves stole everything. They even took my university scarf. (Los ladrones lo robaron todo. Incluso se llevaron mi bufanda de la uni.)

When even focuses on the subject of the sentence, it goes before the subject, e.g.:

All my relatives came to see my paintings. Even my old grandmother turned up. (Todos mis parientes vinieron para ver mis cuadros. Incluso mi abuela, que es muy mayor, apareció por allí.)
