1.13 Subjunctive




There are virtually no subjunctive verb forms in English.

Here are examples of the subjunctive in Spanish, with translations into English and references to the relevant sections of this grammar.



Quiero que vayas.
(I want you to go.) (See reported requests and orders.)
Si viniese mañana, hablaría con ella.
(If she came tomorrow, I would speak to her.) (See second conditional.)
Si me hubiese escuchado, no hubiese ocurrido.
(If you had listened to me, it wouldn't have happened.) (See third conditional.)
Quizá venga.
(She may/might come.) (See possibility, probability, certainty.)
Necesitamos a alguien que hable chino.
(We need someone who speaks Chinese.) (See defining relative clauses.)
Cuando esté oscuro del todo, podremos empezar.
