1.13 Subjunctive




There are virtually no subjunctive verb forms in English.

Here are examples of the subjunctive in Catalan, with translations into English and references to the relevant sections of this grammar.



Vull que hi vagis.
(I want you to go.) (See reported requests and orders.)
Si vingués demà, parlaria amb ella.
(If she came tomorrow, I would speak to her.) (See second conditional.)
Si m'haguessis escoltat, no hauria passat.
(If you had listened to me, it wouldn't have happened.) (See third conditional.)
Pot ser que vingui.
(She may/might come.) (See possibility, probability, certainty.)
Necessitem algú que parli xinès.
(We need someone who speaks Chinese.) (See defining relative clauses.)
Quan estigui ben fosc, podrem començar.
(When it is quite dark, we will be able to begin) (See adverbial clauses of future time.)
