8.1 Conjunctions: Both ... and, either ... or, neither ... nor

Vet aquí exemples de both ... and (tant ... com), either ... or (o ... o) i neither ... nor (ni ... ni):

Both Robin and Richard are good swimmers. (Tant en Robin com en Richard són bons nedadors.)

Sally can both sing and play the piano. (La Sally sap tant cantar com tocar el piano.)

You can pay either by cheque or in cash. (Pots pagar o amb xec o bé en metàl·lic.)

Either they come tomorrow or there will be trouble. (O vénen demà o hi haurà problemes.)

We don't have either the expertise or the time.1 (No tenim ni l'habilitat ni el temps.)

We have neither the expertise nor the time.1 (No tenim ni l'habilitat ni el temps.)

Neither Tom nor Eric passed the exam. Error: Neither Tom nor Eric didn’t pass the exam. Error: Neither Tom nor Eric not passed the exam. (Ni en Tom ni l'Eric no van aprovar l'examen.)

1 Observeu que si hi ha una paraula negativa (aquí, don't), es fa servir either ... or. Les dues versions signifiquen el mateix, però neither ... nor és més formal.
