6.5 Interrogative pronouns

Les paraules interrogatives> són: who?, what?, which?, how?, when?, where? i why?

Vet aquí uns quants exemples:

Who did you see? (A qui vas a veure?)

What are you drinking? (Què beus?)

What kind of food do you like? (Quina classe de menjar t'agrada?)

Which do you prefer? (Quin/a prefereixes?)

Which book do you prefer? (Quin llibre prefereixes?)

How do you know? (Com ho saps?)

When will they finish? (Quan acabaran?)

Where do you live? (On vius?)

Why are you laughing? (Per què rius?)

Noteu que tant what com which es poden fer servir amb un substantiu (what kind, which book) o sense. Pel que fa al sentit, la diferència entre aquests dos interrogatius és que what implica una selecció àmplia o indeterminada, mentre que which implica una selecció limitada, p. ex.:

What do you like doing at the weekends? (There are many possibilities.) (Què t'agrada fer els caps de setmana?) (Error: Which do you like to do at the weekend?)

There's red or white wine. Which would you like? (There are only 2 possibilities.) (Hi ha vi negre i vi blanc. Quin t'agradaria?) (Error: There's red or white wine. What would you like?)

Noteu que which pot anar acompanyat d'una frase introduïda amb of, però no what o who, p. ex.:

Which of the boxes are full? (Quines de les caixes són plenes?) (Error: What of the boxes are full?)

Which of the girls can speak French? (Quines de les noies saben parlar francès?) (Error: Who of the girls can speak French?)

Es fa servir how amb much, many, often i long per formar les expressions interrogatives: how much?, how many?, how often? how long? i també amb adjectius i adverbis, p. ex.: how big?, how quickly?

How much bread do we have? (Quant pa tenim?)

How many times have you seen Matrix? (Quantes vegades has vist Matrix?)

How often do you eat out? (Amb quina freqüència menges fora?)

How long are you going to stay? (Quant de temps et quedaràs?)

How wide is the river? (Quina amplada té el riu?)

How well do you play the piano? (Com de bé toques el piano?)

Es forma una altra expressió interrogativa amb what i la preposició like, p. ex.:

What's Prague like? (Com és Praga?)

What's her husband like? (Com és el seu home?)

Noteu la diferència quan how? i what ... like? fan referència a persones:

A: How's your sister?  B: She’s getting better, thanks. (Com està la teva germana?) (A: Com està la teva germana?  B: S’està millorant, gràcies.)

A: What's your sister like?  B: She’s hard-working and ambitious. (A: Com és la teva germana?  B: És treballadora i ambiciosa.)

En general, quan la frase interrogativa consisteix en una paraula interrogativa i una preposició, el més normal és que la preposició vagi al final, p. ex.:

What's the story about? (De què tracta la història?)

What are they looking at? (Què miren?)

Who was she looking for? (Qui buscava?)

Which subjects are you most interested in? (Quines matèries t'interessen més?)

La gran majoria de les preguntes es formen traslladant el verb auxiliar davant del subjecte.

Tanmateix, quan la paraula o frase interrogativa fa referència al subjecte de l'oració, l'estructura de la pregunta és la mateixa que la de l'afirmació, p. ex.:
