3.3 A/An, some, any, no


Fem servir a/an amb noms comptables singulars.
Fem servir some, any i no  amb noms comptables plurals i noms incomptables (normalment).
Fem servir some en afirmacions positives (normalment).
Fem servir no, not, never i any en afirmacions negatives.
La paraula any en si mateixa NO és negativa.

Fem servir any amb noms plurals o incomptables en preguntes normals.
Fem servir some amb noms plurals o incomptables quan s'espera o es desitja una resposta positiva (típicament, si s'ofereix alguna cosa).

Les formes que fem servir sense nom són: some, any, none. Compareu:


A: We haven't got any bread. Have you bought some? (No tenim pa. N'has comprat?)
 B: No I haven't bought any. (No, no n'he comprat.)

C: Have the parcels arrived? (Els paquets han arribat?)
 D: No, none have arrived yet. (No, encara no n'ha arribat cap.)


Some, any i none poden anar acompanyades de la preposició of + un nom, p. ex.:


Some of the girls have forgotten their books.
(Algunes de les noies havien oblidat els seus llibres.)

Some of the cheese has gone bad.
(Una part del formatge s'ha fet malbé.)

I've never seen any of your drawings.
(No he vist mai cap dels teus dibuixos.)

None of the parcels has / have arrived.
(Cap dels paquets no ha arribat.)

Exemples:


There's somebody at the door.

I didn't speak to anybody / anyone.
(No vaig parlar amb ningú.)

I never eat anything spicy.
(No menjo mai res picant.)

I can't find my pen anywhere.
(No trobo el meu boli enlloc.)

Nobody / No one came.
(Ningú no va venir.)

Nothing happened.
(No va passar res.)


Quan el subjecte es forma amb l'adverbi no + un substantiu, la frase ja té el sentit negatiu, p. ex.:


No students went to class.

(Cap estudiant no va anar a classe.)


Observeu que les paraules amb any NO són negatives, per tant:

Error: Anybody came.
Error: Anything happened.



Fem servir any (i no una paraula negativa) en comparacions, p. ex.:


Peter knows more than anybody.
(El Peter sap més que ningú.)
Error: Peter knows more than nobody.

Petrol is better than anything else for cleaning a bicycle chain.
(La benzina és millor que qualsevol altra cosa per a netejar la cadena d'una bici.)
Error: Petrol is better than nothing for cleaning a bicycle chain.



Tanmateix, any i les paraules amb any tenen una segona funció que correspon a ‘qualsevol’ en català, p. ex.:


A: What colour paint do you want? (De quin color voleu la pintura?)
 B: Any dark colour will be all right. (Qualsevol color fosc anirà bé.)

Anybody with an allergy should go to the doctor.
(Qualsevol que tingui al·lèrgia hauria d'anar al metge.)

C: What would you like for lunch? (Què vols per dinar?)
 D: Oh, anything at all. (Oh, qualsevol cosa.)
