9.1 Sentence structure: negative

Les paraules negatives són: not, no, none, nobody, nothing, nowhere, never, neither, nor. En anglès estàndard, quan una frase conté una paraula negativa, la frase pot tenir una paraula tipus any (any, anybody, anything, anywhere, ever, either, yet). La paraula negativa apareix abans de la paraula tipus any, p. ex.:

None of the boys bought anything. (Cap dels nois no va comprar res.) (Error: Any of the boys bought nothing.) (Error: Any of the boys didn't buy anything.) (Error: None of the boys didn't buy anything.) (Error: None of the boys didn't buy nothing.)

Nobody has come and nobody has phoned, either. (Ningú no ha vingut i ningú no ha trucat tampoc.) (Error: ... anybody has phoned, either.) (Error: ... anybody has phoned, neither.) (Error: ... aobody has phoned, neither.)

I haven't found anybody willing to lend me any money. (No he trobat ningú disposat a prestar-me diners.)

Nobody offered to help either of us. (Ningú no es va oferir a ajudar-nos a cap de nosaltres.)

En comparacions es fa servir una paraula de la sèrie any, i no una de negativa, p. ex.:

Peter knows more than anybody. (En Peter sap més que ningú.) (Error: Peter knows more than nobody.)

Petrol is better than anything else for cleaning a bicycle chain. (La benzina és millor que qualsevol altra cosa per a netejar la cadena d'una bici.) (Error: Petrol is better than nothing for cleaning a bicycle chain.)

The stars tonight are brighter than ever. (Les estrelles aquesta nit brillen més que mai.) (Error: The stars tonight are brighter than never.)

Trobareu frases amb més d'una paraula negativa. Encara que siguin freqüents, aquestes formes sovint es consideren col·loquials i, per tant, no es recomana fer-les servir en contextos formals,

I haven't seen nobody. (No he vist ningú.)

You ain't goin' nowhere. (Tu no vas enlloc.)

Nobody told us nothing. (Ningú no ens va dir res.)
