Fa referència a situacions contràries a la realitat passada. L'anglès no fa servir gaire formes subjunctives del verb. En la condició, la forma del verb és el past perfect; en la clàusula, la forma és més aviat would have + el participi passat, p. ex.:
| If Tony had studied harder, he would have passed his test. (Si en Tony hagués estudiat més, hauria passat la prova.) |
| We would have won the match if the referee had given us the penalty. (Hauríem guanyat el partit si l'àrbitre ens hagués donat el penal.) |
| If you hadn't got into university, what would you have done? (Si no haguessis entrat a la universitat, què hauries fet? |
També podem fer servir wish i if only per a expressar situacions contràries a la realitat passada, p. ex.:
| Tony wishes he had worked harder. (En Tony desitjaria haver estudiat més.) |
| If only the referee had given us the penalty. (Tant de bo l'àrbitre ens hagués donat el penal.) |
