10.13 Short answers

Les respostes curtes comunes són yes i no, i sovint s'hi afegeix un pronom i un verb auxiliar. Amb el present i passat de be, es formen les respostes curtes amb la part corresponent de be, p. ex.:

A: Are you English? (És vostè anglesa?) B: Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. (Sí, ho sóc./No, no ho sóc.)

C: Were they there? (Hi eren?) D: Yes they were. / No, they weren't. (Sí, hi eren./No, no hi eren.)

Quan l'oració conté un verb auxiliar, sia be o have, sia un verb modal, es formen les repostes curtes amb l'auxiliar, p. ex.:

A: Are you listening carefully? (Escolteu amb atenció?) B: Yes, we are. / No, we aren't. (Sí, ho fem./No, no ho fem.)

C: Have you seen Peter? (Has vist en Peter?) D: Yes, I have. / No, I haven't. (Sí, ho he fet./No, no ho he fet.)

E: Can you help me? (Em pots ajudar?) F: Yes, I can. / No, I can't. (Sí, puc./No, no puc.)

Quan l'oració no conté cap verb auxiliar, es formen les respostes curtes amb el verb auxiliar do, p. ex.:

G: Do you work in Spain? (Treballes a Espanya?) H: Yes, I do. / No, I don't. (Sí, ho faig./No, no ho faig.)

I: Did you phone the bank? (Vas trucar al banc?) J: Yes, I did. / No, I didn't. (Sí, ho vaig fer./No, no ho vaig fer.)
