El verb més habitual és can, p. ex.:

| Ann could swim. (L'Ann sabia nedar.) |
| Tim couldn't move the box. (En Tim no podia moure la caixa.) |
Noteu que quan la capacitat de fer una cosa s'esdevé realment i, per tant, deixa de ser una possibilitat, fem servir managed to o was/were able to, PERÒ NO could, p. ex.:

The boys managed to escape from the fire. (Els nois van poder escapar de l'incendi.) |

3 Ability and capacity: future
Com en català, sovint s'expressa amb la forma present:
Kim can come tomorrow.
(En Kim pot venir demà.)
També es pot destacar la referència al futur:
Ann will be able to swim.
(L'Ann sabrà nedar.)
