Most questions ask about an object:
Object |
Auxiliary |
Subject |
Main verb |
Who |
did |
they |
tell? |
What |
are |
you |
looking at? |
Which film |
does |
he |
prefer? |
But sometimes we need to ask a question about the subject. In this case, the word order is the same as in an affirmative sentence, so in the present simple and the past simple tenses there is no auxiliary verb:
Subject |
Main verb |
Object / complement |
Who |
lives |
in that house? |
Who |
shot |
the sheriff? |
What |
went |
wrong? |
Which film |
made |
the most money? |
