6.8 There and it contrasted
In general there is, etc., corresponds to Catalan hi ha, etc., e.g.:
 | There's a good Chinese restaurant in the next street.
(Hi ha un bon restaurant xinès al proper carrer.) |
 | Is there any reason why they should refuse?
(Hi ha alguna raó per la qual dirien que no?) |
We use it for light and weather conditions, e.g.:
 | It's very dark in that church.
(L'interior d'aquella església és molt fosca.) |
 | Look! It's started to rain.
(Mira! Ha començat a ploure.) |
| |
But notice the contrast between the following:
 | There was a lot of cloud/fog/ice.
(Hi havia molts núvols/molta boira/molt de glaç.) |
 | It was very cloudy/foggy/icy.
(Estava molt núvol/boirós/glaçat.) |
|
We also use it to refer to a noun phrase, e.g.:
 | There is a lot of rubbish. It's all over the floor.
(Hi ha molta porqueria. És a tot el terra.) |
