The indefinite article is a/an; the definite article is the.

The choice of a or an depends on the sound (not the letter) at the beginning of the noun: if the sound is a consonant, then a; if the sound is a vowel, then an, e.g.:



a: a girl; a tall girl; a table; a long table; a European organisation; a university; a yacht
an: an apple; an egg; an honest person; an hour; an honour; an Indian; an icecream; an umbrella; an open university

In general we use the articles in English in similar ways to their use in Catalan. However, in English:





    Mary is a dentist.
    (La Mary és dentista.)
  Example Catalan
Names Maria is a dentist. La Maria és dentista.
Personal pronouns This is mine and that is yours. Aquest és el meu i aquell és
el teu.
Percentages The new measure affects 30% of the population. La nova mesura afecta el 30% de la població.
Things in general Food is more important than freedom. El menjar és més important que la llibertat.
Indian food is more spicy than Chinese food. El menjar indi és més picant que el menjar xinès.
A: Do you like dogs?
B: I like big dogs but not small ones.
A: T'agraden els gossos?
B: M'agraden els gossos
grans però no els petits.


Notice that one is not an article, so:



Tenim un pis petit.


is in English:



We have a small flat.
(Not: We have one small flat).


There are expressions that have different presuppositions with and without the, e.g.:



My daughter studies at university, but my son still goes to school.
(La meva filla estudia a la universitat però el meu fill encara va a l'escola.)
There was a bomb scare at the university.
(Hi va haver una alerta de bomba a la universitat.)
Firefighters went to the school to check the safety measures.
(Els bombers van anar a l'escola per comprovar les mesures de seguretat.)

at/to school Subject is a pupil
at/to university Subject is a student
at/to church Subject is attending service
in/into hospital Subject is a patient
in/into prison Subject is a prisoner


Notice these other expressions that do not have the:



John's ill so he's stayed at home.
(En John està malalt i per tant s'ha quedat a casa.)
Mary went home early.
(La Mary ha anat a casa abans.)
I'm going to go to bed.
(Me'n vaig anar al llit.)
Are the children still in bed?
(Els nens encara són al llit?)
My mother goes to work by tube.
(La meva mare va a la feina amb el metro.)
Jim isn't at work today.
(En Jim no és a la feina avui.)
Her husband spends most of the time at sea.
(El seu marit passa la majoria del temps al mar.)
