1.35 Verbs with two objects


As in Catalan, there are verbs that have both an indirect object and a direct object, e.g.:



I gave the book to Peter.
(Vaig donar el llibre al Peter.)


In English there is an alternative word order, e.g.:



I gave Peterthe book.
(Vaig donar al Peter el llibre.)


When there are pronouns, we have, e.g.:



I gave it to Peter.
(El vaig donar al Peter.)
I gave himthe book.
(Li vaig donar el llibre.)
I gave it to him.
(L'hi vaig donar.)
I gave himit.
(L'hi vaig donar.)


Verbs that take an indirect object with to include: award, bring, give, grant, hand, leave, lend, offer, owe, pass, pay, promise, read, return, sell, send, show, teach, tell, throw, write.


Verbs that take an indirect object with for include: book, bring, buy, call, choose, cook, do, fetch, gather, knit, leave, make, order, prepare, save, spare, e.g.:



I made my mothera cup of tea.
(Vaig preparar una tassa de te per a la meva mare.)
I made a cup of tea for my mother.
(Vaig preparar una tassa de te per a la meva mare.)
