Verbs plus prepositions

As in Catalan, many English verbs need a preposition before an object, e.g.:

I was thinking. (Pensava.)

I was thinking about Paul. (Pensava en en Peter.)

Jack spoke. (En Jack va parlar.)

Jack spoke to Jenny. (En Jack va parlar amb la Jenny.)

However, some English verbs need a preposition when the corresponding verb in Catalan does not, e.g.:

The girls listened carefully. (Les noies escoltaven curosament.)

The girls listened carefully to the announcement. (Les noies escoltaven l'anunci curosament.)

We looked. (Miràvem.)

We looked at all the paintings. (Miràvem tots els quadres.)

Notice also that the preposition in English does not always correspond to the preposition in Catalan, e.g.: Our decision depends on the weather. (La nostra decisió depèn del temps.) Eric dreamt about me. (L'Eric somiava amb mi.)

As always, a verb after a preposition must be the –ing form, e.g.:

I'm thinking about handing in my notice. (Penso a acomiadar-me.)

Larry insisted on sitting next to me. (En Larry va insistir a seure al meu costat.)
